Join Us for a Greener Future at the INTERNATIONAL BORNEO SEVENS 2025 Rugby Tournament!
In keeping with our title as The Greenest Sevens In The World, we’re kicking off the tournament with a symbolic tree planting ceremony. Organized by Eagles Rugby Club Sandakan, this eco-friendly initiative celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the International Borneo Sevens Tournament and reinforces our commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Event Highlights:
- Date & Venue: February 19, 2025, at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (just 20 km from Sandakan)
- Green Initiative: As part of our ‘Green Initiative,’ 20 fruit tree saplings (mainly figs) will be planted to symbolize our shared duty to nurture and protect the environment.
- Special Guests: Honoured attendees include Sandakan MP YB Puan Vivian Wong, Deputy Chief Conservator Dr. Arthur Chung, ERC President Velayuthan Tan, and key representatives from top sponsors like KLK Bhd., TSH Resources Bhd., and more.
Why Tree Planting?
Trees do more than beautify our surroundings—they actively combat climate change by:
- Sequestering Carbon: A mature tree absorbs about 22 kg (48 lbs) of CO₂ annually.
- Producing Oxygen: One tree provides enough oxygen for up to 4 people each year.
- Improving Air Quality: Trees filter dust and pollutants, reducing harmful particulates.
- Conserving Water & Cooling: They help retain water in the soil and cool their surroundings by up to 8°C (14.4°F).
- Supporting Wildlife: Each tree offers shelter to countless birds, insects, and small mammals.
Did You Know?
The Ficus genus (fig trees) plays a critical role in nature—especially for orangutans, who rely on them year-round. With unique fruit structures and fascinating reproductive traits, these trees are a natural treasure.
